ICONS are a form of visual symbolic language that tell the story of the Gospel and Old Testament. Icons can lead us to deeper relationship to God through combing prayer and painting. This icon writing workshop is an opportunity to explore learning about icons in a beautiful atmosphere of prayer.
Both beginners and more advanced students will receive a wealth of information and guidance. You do not have to be an artist to write Icons. If you have already painted some Icons, this course will help you to improve your skills and understanding so that you can attempt more complicated icons in the future. If you have never painted an Icon, this course will take you step by step through all the necessary drawing and painting necessary in Iconography.
Byzantine Style Icon Writing Classes using traditional materials of egg tempera, natural pigments, and specially prepared icon board, and gold leaf gilding.
Class Size: 8-12 Students
4 Days: two, three hour sessions per day, plus slide show one evening with history of icons and also modern examples. We are invited to join in with the prayer cycle at the monastery in between sessions.
Christine Hales is a well-loved teacher and iconographer whose icon commissions are at St. Vincent’s Church in Albany, the Spiritual Life Center in Greenwich, Connecticut, and many private collections. She has taught icon-writing workshops for over ten years, and her style of icon writing is both contemporary and honors the ancient traditions of iconography.
