The Pierced Hands that Hold Us

“The hands that hold us in existence are pierced with unimaginable nails.” These striking words of John Austin Baker sum up the Christian revelation of a God who suffers in us, with us, and for us. The Cross of Christ was no mere temporary tragedy, quickly offset by the Resurrection, but the revelation of the eternal vulnerability and passion in the love that sustains all things in life. Join us for a retreat that will take soundings in this deepest mystery of the good news, shed new light on what intercession actually is, and might help us see with the eyes of faith how God keeps us company in the worst that can befall us.

Father Martin L. Smith is well known throughout the Episcopal Church and beyond for his explorations of contemporary spirituality through workshops, retreats and preaching, and widely read books, including The Word is Very Near You, A Season for the Spirit, Reconciliation, Compass and Stars, Love Set Free, and recently, with the Rev. Julia Gatta, Go in Peace: the Art of Hearing Confessions. He has over thirty years of experience in training and supervising preachers and spiritual directors. Now retired, he makes Washington, DC his base for a roving ministry of spiritual formation and teaching.
